Different Diamond Grading Labs and Certificates

gia logo A GIA certificate is issued by the GIA, which stands for the Gemological Institute of America. It is currently widely adopted. The international diamond grading system for cut, carat, clarity, and color was created in 1953 by Richard T. Liddicoat, the Chairman of the GIA. After the establishment of this system, which emphasized completeness and consistent results, many people requested that the GIA establish a submission process. As a result, the GIA issued its first diamond grading report, which we refer to as a diamond certificate, in 1955. In addition to issuing certificates for natural diamonds, GIA also provides appraisal and certification services for lab-grown diamonds. IGI logo

IGI

IGI certificates are issued by the International Gemological Institute. Established in Belgium in 1975, the International Gemological Institute initially provided private diamond appraisals for a select few diamond families. After these high-quality diamonds were sold to European royalty, IGI's reputation gradually grew, to the extent that even Middle Eastern royalty sent their jewelry to IGI for appraisal. IGI appraises most lab-grown diamonds, and its certificate standards are largely similar to GIA's. For cut, IGI offers an "Ideal" grade, which is one level higher than GIA's top "Excellent" cut grade, with "Ideal" being its highest cut grade. EGL logo

EGL

The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) is a pioneering organization in diamond grading. Established in 1974, EGL has appraised most of the diamonds and gemstones exported from Israel for many years. EGL has offices worldwide, and in November 2009, EGL Asia Laboratory established a business liaison center in Shanghai, China, making it popular in the Chinese market. Additionally, EGL's appraisal services are relatively inexpensive, making them favored by small diamond retailers. The structure of EGL certificates is similar to traditional GIA reports, but the standards are more lenient than GIA's, which has led to questions regarding EGL's credibility. HRD logo

HRD

The Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) was established in Antwerp, the renowned diamond city, where the diamond industry has a history of about 1500 years. Over 50% of the world's gem-quality diamonds are sold from here to various parts of the world. HRD's laboratory is an ISO/IEC 17025 certified gemological laboratory. HRD certificates use more descriptive language; for example, diamond colors are not categorized as D, E, F, etc., but rather with phrases like "WHITE" and "SLIGHTLY TINTED WHITE," and colors below N are not further distinguished. Additionally, HRD offers a quick "Diamond Identification Certificate" for diamonds under 1 carat, which contains more concise information compared to its full "Diamond Certificate." HRD's appraisal process is rigorous and adheres to an anonymous principle to ensure the objectivity of the appraisal results. HRD certificates hold a certain status in Europe and are recognized by many major diamond distributors and buyers in Belgium and the Netherlands. Recommended Reading:
